Fighting Hawks Top Rider 5-4, Fall to Maryland 9-4

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The North Dakota Softball team started the Capital City Classic Friday facing Rider and then facing hosts Maryland. In the early afternoon game against Rider, the Hawks came out on top 5-4 as Jackie Albrecht picked up her first win of the season and Camryn Lasota picked up the save while Fallyn Stoeckel took the loss. In game two Makaela Carr took the loss for UND while Kyra Pittman got the win.

To start the game against Rider, both pitchers were on point. After two innings both pitchers were yet to surrender a hit. In the top of the third Rider got a leadoff single but Albrecht worked around it to keep them off the board and strand two runners. Katie Joten got a single in the bottom of the frame but UND was unable to capitalize.

In the bottom of the fourth UND broke through, starting with three straight singles from Madi Moore, Izzy Haslett and Cassie Castaneda, who brought Moore in from third. Madison Pederson followed with a double to bring Haslett in and make it 2-0. Later in the inning Taya Hopfauf singled to bring Castaneda in and make it 3-0. Later Angie Dumlao reached on an error with the bases loaded to make it 4-0.

Rider came back to make it 4-2 in the top of the sixth, but ND answered with a run in the bottom of the frame as Baylee Howley came in to score on an errant throw after leading off with a single and then stealing two bases. In the top of the seventh Rider put two more runs on the board but Camryn Lasota closed the game out.

It was 2-1 going into the bottom of the third when Maryland went off for six runs. It was part of nine unanswered by Maryland. UND got a couple of runs back as Joten and Howley led off the seventh with back to back doubles to make it 9-3, and then later Howley scored on an RBI groundout but the hole was too big to climb out of for UND, going against the 22nd ranked Terps.
