Fighting Hawks Pick Up First Win, Split With Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The North Dakota Softball team picked up their first win of the 2023 campaign Tuesday as they defeated Lindenwood 7-5 in the second game of the day against the hosting Lions. Makaela Carr (1-2) picked up the win, her first for UND. Camryn Lasota picked up the save, the first of her career. Keighlan Cronin (1-4) took the loss for Lindenwood. In game one, Amanda Weyh (3-2) got the win while Lasota (0-5) took the loss.  

In game one, UND had their best scoring chance in the top of the sixth as Katie Joten and Madison Pederson got back to back two out singles. Pederson had two of the four hits in the game, but the pair was unable to be brought home.

In game two, Madi Moore led off with a double down the left field line and then two batters later Cassie Castaneda launched a homer to left to make it 2-0. It was the second homerun in St. Charles for the UND catcher. In the top of the second, the Hawks had the based loaded with two outs but could not expand on their 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Carr got out of a jam with runners on the corners with a fielder's choice with two outs.

In the top of the third, Taya Hopfauf, who went 4-4 in the game, hit a two run jack to left center to double the lead to four runs. Mariah Peters, who got three hits, got on with a one out single and came in on the long ball. Lindenwood got two back in the bottom of the fourth, but in the top of the fifth Peters got another one out single and came in to score on a two out double by Hopfauf to make it 5-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Lindenwood got a run to make it 5-3 and then a two run homer in the sixth tied the game at five. In the top of the seventh Castaneda led off with a single, then with two outs Logan Gronberg connected on the game winning home run to center field. Lasota came in in the bottom of the seventh to finish out the game and seal the win.

 

Key Points

·         Jackie Albrecht struck out seven batters in relief in game one, her highest since eight at CSU Bakersfield last March.

·         Peters had her second career three hit game in game two.

·         Hopfauf doubled her season totals in hits from four to eight in game two today, and doubled her RBIs from three to six.

·         UND had six extra base hits in game two, 12 hits total.

The Hawks will be back in action Thursday as they travel to Lubbock for the five games at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. They take on Texas Tech Thursday at 6 PM and then take on Rutgers at 10 AM the next day followed by Seton Hall at 12:30 PM Friday. The Friday schedule is the exact same for Saturday.
